Last October, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Disarm Domestic Violence — a collaboration between the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), Prosecutors Against Gun Violence (PAGV), and the Alliance for Gun Responsibility — published its inaugural blog. Each month for the last year, we have amplified different perspectives on domestic violence. We have featured guest blogs from multiple survivors of domestic violence, a legislator, a law enforcement officer, a prosecutor, and others. Each of these voices illuminates different aspects of the issue, brings a unique point of view, and contributes to our ultimate goal: stopping domestic violence, including domestic violence perpetrated with firearms.

We know more than half of all women murdered in the United States are killed by an intimate partner with a gun. We know that removing guns from abusers can be life-saving. And we know that state laws regarding firearm removal are often complicated, confusing, and can vary across state lines. So we decided to create a new, comprehensive website to make information on firearm removal more accessible. We are proud to announce that the Disarm Domestic Violence website — more than a year in the making — launches today.

Disarm Domestic Violence allows individuals to research state-specific laws on domestic violence restraining order firearm removals. The website presents necessary information in a user-friendly manner, including an interactive map that allows users to see details about removal in their states and compare state laws. Disarm Domestic Violence will enable survivors, advocates, and others to get the information they need without having to conduct extensive legal research on their own. Using the information they gain from the site, individuals can then take the necessary steps to remove guns from abusers.

No one should have to live in fear of an armed abuser. Information about firearm removal should be readily available and easy to understand. Disarm Domestic Violence checks these boxes; the website will provide a much-needed, empowering resource for those seeking information on the removal process. We are confident this new tool will help disarm domestic abusers and save lives.
