Professional Spotlight: Chaitali Parikh Mehta

Chaitali Parikh-Mehta graduated from New York’s Parsons School of Design in 2007 with a BFA degree in Interior Design. She then worked with the prestigious Manhattan firm ICRAVE before moving back to India. Stints at Urban Studio and ZZ Architects gave her the experience to start her own design practice Inscape Designers, along with her mother, Sejal Parikh. Chaitali has also been a visiting faculty member at the Mumbai chapter of ISDI, Parsons since August 2014. For the mother-daughter duo, art, design and travel are passions which have led them to explore over 30 countries, on their own and as a team.

When asked about the design philosophy that she strongly believes in, Chaitali replies with a fitting quote: “A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away”- Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

Inscape Designers’ speciality lies in Interior Design (Residential & Retail). The firm has received a number of awards and certifications, some of which include an Interior Design BFA from Parsons School of Design, New York. Various publications, such as Inside Outside, Elle Decor, Home Review and CW Interiors have featured their work. The firm and its principles have also been seen on Bloomberg-UTV and the real estate show, Magic Bricks.

Chaitali has shared with us some images of a project her design studio recently worked on (pictured above). She says, “ The main inspiration behind the design of the villa was the sharply defined contours of the landscape. This afforded the play of double height volumes, the conversation between the upper and lower levels and lastly the landscape itself, which is integral to the villa’s architecture. Examples of how the surroundings have been incorporated into the home are seen in the walkway which leads you to the main entrance from the parking lot (on the upper level), and how the natural rocky contour of the landscape enters the lower deck, which is seen while descending down the floating wooden staircase.”

According to you, what is the most important learning to keep in mind when designing?

To be as creative as possible and think out of the box. You must not be afraid of experimenting with colours, prints and patterns.

Please mention two role models in the design industry and how they have inspired you.

Antonio Gaudi for his wonderful use of colour and balance of different curves and shapes in his architecture. Tadao Ando for his poetry in concrete.

Which city inspires your creativity? How and why?

New York City. I spent five years studying and working there, so I was exposed to the latest, innovative designs and art across the globe on a daily basis. Whether it was walking around the artsy Chelsea neighbourhood or admiring works at the MoMA, I was constantly inspired.
