I had the pleasure of meeting Neal Shah, CEO and co-founder of CareYaya, a health tech company making significant strides in companion care. CareYaya bridges the gap between families seeking affordable, quality caregiving for their loved ones and healthcare students needing hands-on experience. The company’s marketplace connects families with college-educated caregivers at rates typically around $15-$20 per hour — significantly lower than industry averages.

I first encountered CareYaya at the Stanford Symposium on Neurodegenerative Diseases, where their flyers piqued my interest. The concept of linking prospective and current medical students with senior care patients immediately resonated with me. As a neuroscience student myself, I’ve seen many peers — pre-med students, those on tracks to become MDs, DOs, PAs, speech pathologists, physical therapists, and chiropractors — struggle to fulfill both their volunteering hour requirements and their desire to apply their skills in real-world settings. CareYaya effectively addresses this need while also providing crucial companionship to the elderly.

CareYaya’s rapid expansion highlights its immense potential. The company is actively seeking families in need of senior care. Interestingly, there is currently a higher supply of student caregivers than there are families requiring their services. We are also looking to collaborate with venture capitalists, accelerators, and individuals passionate about elderly care to join our mission.

How CareYaya Started

Neal Shah, a former finance executive with over 15 years of experience and founder of Valtura Capital Partners, transitioned to caregiving after a personal journey. He cared for his wife through years of cancer treatment and later for his grandfather with dementia. This firsthand experience underscored the difficulties of finding reliable caregivers and the guilt often felt by family members when they must take on this role themselves. With 3 million Americans currently caring for someone with an illness or disability, the market is ripe for innovation.

The Joygivers: CareYaya’s Unique Approach

CareYaya’s caregivers, affectionately termed “joygivers,” are college students pursuing careers in healthcare. They offer companionship and assistance with daily activities but are not trained for high-skilled medical tasks. This makes CareYaya an excellent choice for families needing basic support and companionship rather than intensive medical care. The service is both affordable and well-received, with feedback highlighting the value of having caregivers who feel like extended family.

How CareYaya Operates

CareYaya collaborates with local research universities and a network of motivated college students. This model not only provides affordable care but also gives students valuable clinical experience, setting them up for future success in healthcare. The service is available in various regions, particularly near major universities, and is expanding rapidly.

Families seeking caregiving support can easily sign up on CareYaya’s website, specifying their needs and getting matched with suitable caregivers. The platform prioritizes flexibility, affordability, and convenience, allowing families to schedule, book, and pay online.

Looking Ahead

Imagine a future where CareYaya becomes a $100 billion company, revolutionizing caregiving and impacting millions of lives. As Neal reflects on his journey from running a hedge fund in New York City to building a caregiving company in North Carolina, he shares a compelling vision for the future.

Innovating Elder Care with AI: Spirit AI

In an exciting development, CareYaya has launched Spirit AI, an innovation that combines artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) to address the spiritual needs of hospice patients and aging adults who cannot attend traditional religious services. With 1.7 million people in hospice care in the US and only 9,000 chaplains available, Spirit AI offers a vital service.

The VR sessions support personal dialogue with spiritual sources through relaxation exercises, immersive VR prayer experiences, and discussions. Leveraging cutting-edge generative AI technology, Spirit AI creates personalized VR environments that cater to individual spiritual needs. For instance, one patient may experience a Zen garden, while another might prefer a Tibetan monastery. AI-powered adjustments to ambient elements, such as weather, further enhance the experience, which is continually refined based on user feedback.
