Unbroken Tradition: A Talagang Story

In the annals of military history, amidst the tumultuous backdrop of colonial India, one figure stands out not for his battlefield victories, but for his unwavering commitment to tradition. Subedar Major Muladad Khan, a stalwart soldier of the 6th Battalion of the Punjab Regiment, exemplified loyalty and bravery during the conversion. Born in 1822, Muladad Khan’s journey reflects the turbulent landscape of 19th century South Asia. His heroic exploits in conflicts such as the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the Afghan War of 1881, and the Egyptian campaign of 1882 earned him honors and medals, marking him as a warrior of extraordinary bravery. Yet, it was not merely his battlefield prowess that set Muladad Khan apart. This was strictly in keeping with his tradition, rooted in the land of Talagang, a small town in Punjab where his regiment once lived. Despite the winds of modernization by the Indian military, the Khans remained steadfast in their ways, often justifying their resistance to change in Talagang customs. The clash between tradition and modernity finds its stage in the corridors of the 6th Punjab Regiment, where Adjutant Dunsterville, a British officer, tries to bring order and uniformity. However, their efforts were repeatedly thwarted by the Khan, who clung steadfastly to customs. From donning turbans to performing ceremonial parades, Khan’s refrain remained: “It is the custom of the regiment. What you suggest has never happened.” Despite their differences, there was mutual respect between Khan and Dunsterwell, with the latter recognizing the former’s bravery and unwavering devotion to his beliefs. Dunsterville’s reform efforts were often met with resistance, as Khan’s influence spread through the ranks, embodying the spirit of Tala Gang in every aspect of regimental life. Khan’s legacy extended beyond the battlefield. His interactions with Queen Victoria during her visit to England revealed his humility and simplicity amid the pomp and circumstance. Stories of his home, full of England’s lush greenery and the splendor of its cattle, endeared him to those around him, bridging the gulf between cultures. In 1888, Khan retired, leaving behind a legacy that far exceeded his time in service. His passing marks the end of an era, but his spirit lives on in the timeless traditions of the 6th Punjab Regiment. Despite his retirement, Khan’s influence remained, shaping the ethos of the regiment for years to come. In the annals of military history, the story of Subedar Major Muladad Khan is a testament to the enduring power of tradition amidst the winds of change. His unwavering commitment to the rituals of Talagang serves as a reminder of the indomitable spirit that defines the human experience, transcending time and space.
