Whether trying to balance work and life, running a marathon, working towards your dream, chasing after the kids or trying to make a marriage work, there are some situations we can find ourselves in where we want to keep going but really struggle to maintain motivation. We have to give every last drop of will-power and energy not to just give up and pack it all in.
In these situations. it’s important to understand nothing is worth it if you are not all into it. Simply put.. take care of yourself first. We often find ourselves turning to mental tricks and prayer to try and convince ourselves to keep going. So what are some of the best techniques you can use in the moment to ensure that you persist?
Draw Inspiration from Simple Moments
You must have some good moments that you can look back at and smile even today. Majority of us have stories and memories that we can use to dig deep and find inspiration. Perhaps you had a parent or a friend who never gave up no matter what. Maybe you remember them challenging you to accomplish something and really believing in you. Or maybe you have a favorite movie or event that keeps its memory alive. Either way, these sorts of thoughts and memories can help you to dig deep when you’re really struggling for energy, commitment or will-power.
If that doesn’t work, try an inspiring music that lifts your spirit. Some people resort to their favorite song or a gospel track that speaks of trials and triumphs. Regardless of what it is, make certain it embodies you with peace and determination.
Remind Yourself Why You’re Doing It
Everything you do should have purpose and meaning. Remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. Is it for yourself or is it for someone else. If you’re working towards a dream then try visualizing yourself where you want to be when you complete the task. If you’re trying to make money, that might mean imagining yourself on a cruise, on your dream vacation, or in your dream house. Use visuals to help make your goals more realistic. I always remind my clients to give deadlines to their timelines. Meaning establish a date that you plan to accomplish it and stick to it.
Remind Yourself of the Consequences
If you don’t accomplish your goals, what will be the price. Sometimes the stick can be more motivating than the carrot. If imagining yourself being highly successful because you did well isn’t doing the trick, then maybe try doing the opposite instead and imagining what would happen if you had to give up. Imagine having to tell everyone you failed. Imagine knowing you failed… Especially after all the effort you’ve already put in! Failure isn’t fun. However, it could be the medicine you need to achieve your goals. Failure has always been my greatest teacher. It’s given me perspective that I am greater than that.
Break it Down
It’s okay to go slow and at your own pace. The only race you are trying to complete is yours and nobody can beat you at that. If you’re tackling what seems to be an impossible task then sometimes it can help to break it down into smaller milestones. Your goals will seem more achievable if you don’t make the task look so big. Climbing a hill is more motivating than climbing a mountain. For instance, if you’ve dreamed of writing a book, then celebrate each time you add a thousand words and count how many units of 1,000 you have left to go. Take a Break
Taking a break requires you understanding Rome wasn’t build in a day and great things take time. Sometimes the best thing to do is to take a step back and have a breather. A breath of fresh air ain’t never hurt anyone. Your peace will help you to achieve moreso than your anger. Be strategic with your energy management and realize that a short time away can often yield better results in the long term. You will also appreciate the process and respect it more.
