The Hero Within You

Once upon a time, you used to believe you were destined to become a hero. You watched cartoons, read storybooks and instinctively, you knew deep inside that like your favorite cape clad heroes, you too were destined for great responsibilities. So you played catcher and police and thief with your friends, sometimes taking up the role of a criminal and unknowingly learning perspective and empathy, skills you would need to become a fair and just hero.

To your friends, this was just fun and games, a way to while away time before you could watch more cartoons, but to you, this was practice, this was all the preparation you could do while you waited for a charming radioactive spider, the revelation of your real alien parents, or any other extraordinary event to change your life forever.

But nothing extraordinary ever happened to you.

So as you got older, you had to push your superhero dreams behind to focus on more pressing issues, there were tests to be written, degrees to be earned, jobs to be done. Responsibilities gradually began to take all your attention leaving you with less time to focus on becoming a hero until ultimately, you convinced yourself that heroes only exist in the realm of imagination.

They don’t, and it’s never too late to become a hero.

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines a hero as someone who shows great courage; a mythological or legendary figure, often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability.

At DoBetter, we think a hero is anyone who has the courage to decide to fix a bad situation especially if it was not a situation they caused directly.

In a country plagued with unthinkable suffering, one where children are forced to go without food for their brains and their bellies, where people are raped, robbed or maimed and cannot afford to defend themselves or have anyone seek legal redress on their behalf, one where millions of people do not have the luxury of the basic dignities a human deserves; we cannot continue to wait for extraordinary solutions to our problems.

Ten thousand heroes can collectively accomplish just as much or even more than one superhero and at Do Better, we think you can be a hero.

Do Better Nigeria is an initiative that believes the amount of resources and goodwill available to Nigerians are more than adequate to cater for other Nigerians who are suffering and in need. We believe that there are enough heroes in society whose collective contributions can help to make suffering a thing of the past in Nigeria.

Our plan is to use our platform as a means of bridging the gap between people in need and their potential heroes. We intend to use technology as a means of connecting people who genuinely need help to those who can help them by leveraging social media to focus the attention of the general public on issues that need to be fixed so the heroes among us can rise to these challenges.

Our primary focus will be on crowdfunding requests in health, education and legal funding. We will also be showcasing other causes and initiatives involved in social good across board, poverty alleviation, health, education, equality, rape, domestic violence, FGM, mental health and others.

At Do Better, we want to show you all the ways you can be a hero and work with you so you can become the hero we know you are destined to be.

If you are ready to become a hero, follow us on twitter @Dobetterng let’s start this amazing journey.
