One thing I’d like to add — going the same direction- is that one need to build a “vertical” enterprise software. By picking up a vertical, you learn the specifics of an industry and deliver more value in your professional services… and in your product.

I would also recommend to pick a vertical where no-one wants to go and gets your hand dirty i.e learn by doing.

More and more enterprise software value comes from data/metadata/rules and the best way to build a lasting differentiation is do/learn/conceptualize/code.
