What is Motivation? Don Jessop Breakthrough Guy

Aren’t you tired of hearing about motivation?
1000 different techniques, 1000 different strategies!
Give me a f***ing break! Motivation is so easily defined and so easily attained. It’s a wonder people haven’t figured it out yet! In 3 simple parts, you learn all the secrets of motivation you need to succeed!
- What is motivation?
2. Where does it come from?
3. How does one get more of it?
Part 1: What motivation is: The sum of energy needed to accomplish anything.
Part 2: Where motivation comes from:
- Genetics (a natural occurrence of excess energy inside certain human bodies)
2. Environmental pressures
Yep… You heard it. You either got motivation from genes that give you enormous amounts of energy or… you got motivation from circumstances that have trained or continue to train your brain to focus on certain things.
I’ll prove it to you. I loved to ride horses. I always wanted to ride. So, I spent two full decades in the industry. Unfortunately, I fell and injured my brain, multiple times, early in my career as a clinician and trainer. Those falls (environmental pressures) motivated me to read the horses emotions better. That way, I could be safer and more prepared for any outcome.
I mastered it! I became the “new horse whisperer!” I dare say I am the best in the world at reading a horse’s expression. It’s the reason people will spend thousands of dollars for my classes and fly me to their farms all over the country!
Ironically, this desire to be the best with horses, caused a problem. I no longer enjoyed riding like I used to. I burned out! Now I am not motivated to ride. So where, let me ask you, is my motivation to NOT ride, coming from?
You guessed it. Environmental pressures!
Prove me wrong if you can! Tell me it’s me! Tell me I’m sick or broken! I challenge you to take a close look at your own desires. Where did they come from? Did you make them up! NO! You received them from the circumstances that surrounded you then and surround you now!
My original desire to ride was born. My other siblings did not desire relationships with animals. I did. That’s genetic. And the rest is environmental.
Look where you have lost motivation. Did you choose to lose it or did certain circumstances make it less desirable? You already know the answer! You are not broken! You are just you… going through an ocean of possible outcomes!
Part 3: How does once get more motivation?
Now! Let’s be brave here! If we did not choose how we react and we did not choose our genes… Do we have choice at all? Can we choose to be more motivated?
Answer: Yes, of course you have choice! Yet, oddly enough, you don’t get to choose all your choices!
That’s right. Circumstances will drive many of your choices as well. Even now, as you read, a part of you is choosing to check out and return to an easier activity. Yet, another part of you is riveted. Wondering where this is all going.
Whichever part wins out, will be determined by thousands of previous circumstances pressuring to you keep going or… stop. It’s the feeling inside you growing stronger and stronger that will eventually cause you to choose. That feeling, although it’s coming from inside, is growing because circumstances out of your control are pushing on you.
Much of what will help you continue any activity is out of your control. But there is hope.
Are you uncomfortable yet? It’s not my intention. It’s just, you and me, taking an honest peak into human motivation!
My biggest question is this. Can a person who experiences some desire to do something, gain even more motivation on purpose? Can a person rely more on conscious choice rather than circumstantial pressures to drive them toward goals?
Example:
Let’s say you want to be a professional bobsledder. But you don’t want it bad enough to go after it. Can you develop more desire? If so… how?
The answer is yes! You do it by subjecting yourself to circumstances that will naturally drive you toward bobsledding. Circumstances that will drive your daily choices. Circumstances that make it uncomfortable NOT to go bobsledding every day! You must hire a coach, sign up for a class, sign up for a competition, and any other activity that will encourage you moving in that direction.
Allow me to illustrate: You call either allow circumstances to push you and hope they push you in the right direction or you can consciously choose circumstances that will push you.
This illustration below shows it perfectly!

Driven by circumstances: Organic Family pressure — Fear — luck
Driven by chosen circumstances: Ask for family support — Hire a coach — Party with the pros.
Now you have everything you need to know about how motivation works. I’ve simplified it of course, and delineated from hundreds of books I’ve studied and nearly twenty years’ experience teaching leadership and motivation!
