Pretty easy to promote everyone when you’re a 50 person startup. Pretty hard when you’re 5,000 employees deep and at maturity.
When you’re a startup maybe you can call a low skill job that doesn’t require a degree “entry level.” But in reality, and with respect to the customer service profession, low-skilled work and entry level jobs are two entirely different things.
Come on. I feel for these people, but you have to think about more than (brand name company) when looking into the jobs you’re going to have. If you get an MBA or Law Degree or whatever, then take a customer service job (which understandably is often the only thing you can find) you can’t expect the world.
I’d also like to point out that Yelp! isn’t even a profitable company. I doubt Lyft is either right now. They can’t just pay 50k base to random account reps that may or may not produce business (and they get commissions when they do, so who cares what the base is) when they aren’t even a profitable company.
We really need to stop acting like Silicon Valley is supposed to work for every person with a degree that starts working at a (sexy company) that clearly is far out of startup mode.
