Great article. I teach (mostly international) graduate business school students and have found the advice you provide here to be so true. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve had students say something like “I couldn’t believe how helpful people were when I asked”. I have a few (sometimes funny) stories from when it didn’t work out perfectly, but most of the time, most people are happy to share their knowledge and experiences with people who treat them well and listen well.
I also suggest that it’s usually not the CEO or celebrity who can be most helpful. It’s people a layer or two removed who often have the most useful information and will be the most helpful.
