Pretty Please, Alexa
Cheryl Platz

This is more of an issue of parenting than VUI. We should teach children that politeness isn’t just a tool to make people do what you want, it is performed out of respect and empathy with the recipient, which is not something that comes from using a magic word to unlock a phone function. But we also need to teach them that being polite is not only important for the impression it makes on the recipient of your politeness (children understand that Alexa doesn’t have feelings to hurt) but it also matters for how you are projecting yourself to others. That’s not a lesson parents can leave to a user interface to teach their children, it needs modelling.
