This Is How You Get On The TEDx Stage

A step by step guide for getting on stage

So….. You want to give a TEDx Talk????

For me, it was a pretty long road.

It all started with a tweet. Thats right, a tweet.

On December 17, 2014, I read an article in Furniture Today (a trade publication for the furniture & bedding industry) and saw an article the stood out. It was about a guy names Mark Kinsley, who I didn’t know (new, he’s my co-host for The Off The Top Podcast)

Mark saw my tweet, replied and clicked my profile. When he did he saw that I had been writing for years (Literally hundreds of articles). He clicked one, read it, and talked about it on his podcast.

Then, we connected and he asked me to write a blog for the Sleep-Geek Blog (this would be my 1st guest post). I agreed and on February 13th, 2015 my first guest post was published.

The second that article went live, I reached out to Furniture Today and asked for an opportunity to contribute for them as well. Being that I was already a contributor for Sleep-Geek, it was easy for them to say yes. So, on February 18th, 2015 (just a few days after the sleep-geek post) I became a contributor for Furniture Today.

Then, after a few articles, the people at Furniture Today asked me to speak at their Next Generation Conference in September of 2015.

When I returned home from the conference, I saw this tweet from TEDx Raleigh.

I thought that maybe (if i was lucky) I could contribute in some way. So, two days later, I showed up at the planning meeting.

I’m the tall guy in the back : — )

After attending the meeting and listening to what the organizers were looking for, I realized that I had a talk inside me. So, I called Kevin, the Tedx Curator and told him that I had to drop off of the volunteer team because I wanted to submit an application to present. He encouraged me and told me to apply like everyone else. That is what I did.

When I went online to apply, I found that I needed two things,

  1. I needed a short (2-minute) video that explained my idea.
  2. I needed a example of a recent talk.

At that time, I only had one recorded talk. The one I had just given at the Furniture Today Conference. So, that what I posted.

I recorded this quick video (it took me HOURS to get it recorded).

Then I waited….

After the seemingly eternal wait, I attended the selection meeting and heard my name!

After prepping using the Dale Carnegie High Impact Presentations Program, I found myself standing on the iconic TEDx Red Dot.

Having the opportunity to present at TEDx Raleigh was a dream come true.

When people ask me how to get on the TEDx Stage, here’s the advice I give.

Do your work

Even though I say the Tweet started the momentum, the truth is, when Mark went to my website, he found hundreds of blog posts. I had been doing the work of creating content for over 4 years.

As the Chinese Proverb says,

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is today.

Do the right thing for the right reason

If you do the right thing for the right reason, you will ALWAYS get the right result.

No attachments

Many times in my life journey, I have done the right thing for the right reason and found myself disappointed at how slow things come together.

I have learned that the right result always happens, just not in my timing.

We have to be willing to detach from our control of the situaition and be willing to cooperate with karma, God, The Universe of whatever you acknowledge as Ultimate Reality.

The right result WILL happen if you do the right things for the right reason.

This article is really a LONG way of saying…

Do Your Work. Start Today.
