Why Do You Do What You Do?
a parable about heaven & hell
There was once a woman who carried fire and water everywhere she went.
One day she was asked, Why do you carry fire in a torch and water in a bucket everywhere you go?
The woman said,
So that I may quench the fire of hell with the water and incinerate heaven with the flame so that I may do good for no other reason than it is good to do.
I recently heard this Buddhist parable and was deeply moved by the idea.
What would happen if we had no attachments to the good we did. No hope of heaven, no fear of hell. Just a deep desire to do good simply because it is good.
Why do you do what you do?
