Time to play point/counter-point with your host Dr. C. Cat. For all you new people this is where I take your statements and break it down and rip it apart like grandma’s drapes (she’s still mad about that). Shall we play?
“ I consider myself a conservative, but I am liberal on a few things; one of which is gun control.”
Broad term. It’s like me saying that I am progressive…but in reality I got Progressive car insurance. It’s like also saying…I’m not racist, I got a black friend.
“ Between 2000 and 2014, there were 133 mass shootings whereas Germany, the second highest country for public mass shootings, only had 6.”
And in the Munich shooting the gov blamed video games. does it mean they were the cause?
“ The U.S. leads for the amount of homicides among countries, and two-thirds of them are by guns (OECD).”
Britian, Mexico and Brazil is higher, especially when you factor in crime per 100,000 people.
“ Between 2000 and 2013, gun deaths have been higher than death by AIDS, drugs, wars, and terrorism combined”
Those facts add accidential death and suicide into the numbers. When you take those numbers out, it changes…A LOT.
“ Out of the ten countries ranked highest on human development by the UN, U.S. has, by far, the highest amount of suicides”
When you look at raw data, sure…but Japan has the highest suicide rates in the world, followed by South Korea. Their suicide rates are WAY higher than American suicide rates, per 100,000. They should ban guns…they do.
“ About one-third of gun death toll per day are homicides”
But they are in places with very restrictive gun laws. Next…
“ Many are saying that gun control issues are not to be dealt because radical Islam is the root of these shootings.”
The right says that, the left blames “gun culture”. so if 1 muslim doesn’t represent all of Islam, why does he represent all gun owners?
“ “A hunter does not need a semi-automatic rifle to hunt, if he does he sucks, and should go play video games.””
Guns are not only for hunting. they are also used to keep government in check. Since you love using quotes so much “Governments should fear the people, people should not fear their government.”
“3. 1788 was a different time for guns.”
you have no idea what weapons people could buy back than. Pepperbox hand gun, Volley gun, the Ribauldequin, Henry VIII’s Walking Staff, a 3-barreled gun and battle mace, double-barreled cannons, etc all pre 1788 types of weapons.
“ Simple restrictions or bans on some guns does not take away this right, which, thereby, means gun control is not unconstitutional.”
This is just another argument for the meaning of the word “is”. This goes back to arguing the letter of the law vs the spirit of the law. Ben Franklin once said (in different terms) the 1st Amendment is the voice of the people, but the 2nd is the teeth.
