American Society of Anesthesiologists on Patient Safety

Dr. Ezekiel Akande created the Somerset Regional Pain Center, one of Kentucky’s leading organizations for pain management. In addition to his expertise in pain management, Dr. Ezekiel Akande is an anesthesiologist and active member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, a group dedicated to advancing professions related to surgery and anesthesiology.

In August 2016, the American Society of Anesthesiologists held its inaugural National Surgical Patient Safety Summit in conjunction with other leading organizations. It brought more than 100 medical sector professionals together to discuss topics related to patient safety before, during, and after surgical procedures.

The summit focused on ways that every part of a medical team, from the surgeon to the support staff, can have a meaningful impact on patient safety. Workgroups covered technical and non-technical tools such as checklists and surgical site markings that help physicians take extra precautions. Participants also discussed the varied ways in which technology and workplace culture can contribute to patient safety.
