I understand where you are coming from, I really do. But as someone who works in local foodways, I offer the following observations
- The NGO agriculture groups suck up all the air in their advocacy for farmers. NGOs exist to perpetuate the NGOs, that’s it. Some happen to advocate for farmers and small producers, but, mostly they advocate for their own existence.
- As such, there is little room for private entrepreneurship. Farmers are pretty used to getting technical assistance for free from NGOs. You get what you pay for
- People don’t buy a product. They buy a solution to a problem. The sustainable ag world (of which I am a part) has created a solution in local food ways to a problem not enough people have identified. We have to give people what they want before we can give them what they need.
- Humans, Americans in particular have actively, repeatedly chosen commodification over almost everything else.

But their purpose is not to make money or profit, but to meet human need and advance the public interest. If moneymaking becomes their purpose, they are degraded.”
Making money off of food is not degrading to society. Making food to make money and buy a nice boat is not degrading to society. Who on EARTH are you to be so judgemental about how people trade their time for money? Maybe, just maybe, if you actually talked to the people who you are so busy judging in this article you would find out a different story.
