Skin is the largest organ in the human body, and yet it can be one of the most neglected. Taking proper care of skin involves a three-step routine. Getting into the habit of caring for skin can help it stay healthy and youthful-looking.

Cleanse it Gently

Regularly cleaning skin helps remove dirt and oil, clear clogged pores, and helps prevent skin conditions from worsening. Because the skin is sensitive, make sure to use an appropriate cleanser. For example, facial cleansers and body cleansers are different. Those with sensitive skin may need to find a gentle cleanser that is fragrance-free to prevent skin rashes or other conditions from worsening.

Treat any Concerns

After cleansing the skin, the next step is to treat any skin issues. This may include dabbing on anti-wrinkle creams, medications that dry out acne, or exfoliating dry elbows. Serums that have vitamin C, retinol, or alpha hydroxy acids can be especially beneficial in treating skin conditions.

Moisturize All Over

No matter how gentle the cleanser, soap still strips the skin of its natural oils and moisture. Without adding in healthy moisturizer, skin can turn dry, flaky, and itchy. Find a moisturizer that treats any skin conditions. For example, those with aging skin should use a moisturizer that contains collagen and peptides. Teens who are prone to acne may benefit from an oil-free moisturizer that contains salicylic acid. During the colder winter months, it may be necessary to moisturize more than once a day as the weather can dry out skin quickly.

Build a Habit

It doesn’t matter how great the skin products are if they aren’t used regularly. Get into a habit of cleansing, treating, and moisturizing skin every day for the best skin results. It can take six to 12 weeks for the skin to show improvement after beginning a skincare routine. After a basic routine becomes regular, incorporating extras, such as chemical peels or steams, may be considered.

Though it can be overwhelming when looking at products in the skincare aisle, beginning a routine doesn’t have to be scary. Start with a good cleanser, treatment, and moisturizer, and make it a habit. Doing so will have skin looking and feeling good.
