Columbus Day has a curious, for lack of a better term, history. It was originally proposed by a bunch of Italian-American organizations back in the 1930s as a holiday to honor someone of Italian heritage. They probably picked Columbus, not caring about what he did or the results of what he did, just because he was the most famous Italian among most Americans at the time.

Personally, I’d be all for keeping the holiday (who doesn’t like a day off), but renaming it and changing its significance to something far more appropriate. My first choice would be something along the lines of “Native People’s Day,” which some states have already done.
