One Word

Your one-word responses are like arrows.

Spiraling from your fingers with jagged tips,

Ripping through my heart carelessly.

Because one word means you don’t care to say more.

That you’re running out of words to say.

And we both know that eventually,

you’ll realize one word means nothing.

So you’ll say nothing.

And I’ll find myself begging you to just say one,

So I can savor the sound of your voice within my mind a little longer,

Pretending that you might say another.
