This year, our employee resource group Latinx@ changed “Hispanic Heritage Month” to “Latinx Heritage Month” to recognize the intersectional experience of being Latinx.

So, for Latinx Heritage Month this year, we chose the theme “Mejor Juntos/ Better Together” to celebrate and uplift all Latinx communities: Black, Indigenous, Undocumented, Immigrant, LGBTQ+, Women, and more. We encourage you to acknowledge the salient contributions and beauty that Latinx and Immigrant communities bring to this country. Our intersectional identities are what make us better together. During the month, we’ll be asking members of Latinx@ what the theme means to them.

Q: What is your name, what office do you work out of, and how long have you been at Dropbox?

A: My name is Ana Laura Gonzalez Orozco. I’m in the San Francisco office, and I’ve been at Dropbox since March of 2019!

Q: What’s your current role in helping make the world work better?

A: I’m an API support engineer. Sometimes people don’t quite understand how to use our product or how it can help them be happier. My job is to be the expert that will tell them all about it and help them until they are experts themselves!

Q: In your time at Dropbox, what’s something you’ve accomplished that you’re proud of?

A: I haven’t been around for long, but what I’m most proud of is to have earned my team’s trust very quickly. I know they know they can hand off a situation to me and be sure that I’ll handle and fix it. This has resulted in being assigned as a mentor to other new resources to speed up their on-boarding and receiving very nice feedback from the customers I work with!

Q: What does this year’s theme, “Mejor Juntos/ Better Together,” mean to you?

A: I personally strive to be someone to rely on, and I believe the way I do this is to always try to bring my relations to a more personal level. A “be friends instead of co-workers” kind of thing. In my culture, I’ve always admired our natural ability to come together and support each other as a family, no matter what the situation is. We are not strangers, and we will never be. ¡Latinos unidos jamás serán vencidos!

Q: Are there any Latinx leaders or role models that you look up to? How have they shaped who you are today?

A: There’s Guillermo del Toro, an Oscar-winner film director who is also a philanthropist who has literally used money from his pocket to support Mexican students so they could attend a math competition when the government didn’t.

But I honestly wouldn’t reduce it to specific people. We are all around the world doing great things, and we hardly ever give up. We are scientists, musicians, humanitarians, film directors. We are resilient, and we are focused. I feel like the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from them is to believe in myself, work hard for what I want, and wear my origins with pride, because that’s a great part of who I am.

Q: What topic do you feel is top of mind for you and the Latinx community, and why?

A: We need a community that is strong and that will keep encouraging others to achieve what life is about for them, and I believe education is the ultimate tool for this. To me, this is the foundation. Assuring quality education will not only allow the community to be more knowledgable, but also more confident, helping us to give back more to society.

Q: What are you most excited about for this year’s Latinx Heritage Month at Dropbox?

A: To share with the rest of the company what we have to offer to diversity and to connect with the Latinx community, of course! I’m excited to listen to what others have to say about their roots, how they ended up here, what their perception of being Latinx is, and how that has changed over time. I’m excited for us to show how welcoming of a community we can be.

Q: Do you have anything else to share?

A: Just that I’m proud of my roots, and I’m happy that Dropbox joins me in celebrating them!
