Writing & Social Media

Technology has brought a whole new meaning to writing. Typically, with big technological advancements comes a debiliating fear that society and life as we know it will come crumbling down. When it comes to writing, some people fear that social media posts and online blogging will water down the quality of writing we put into the world.

First of all, if you are someone who fears this outcome, I get it. But I think that we should all take a deep breath and remember that things change over time but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

With social media, people who would probably never choose to write for fun are writing about their feelings and experiences in some way. Whether or not you enjoy your crazy aunt’s facebook rants, I encourage you to see the good in the idea that people from all over are finding ways to express themselves and share their stories with the world.

Looking back on my middle school obsession with sad poetry Tumblr accounts and sad music, I can easily recognize that I never had the intention to be a writer at the time in any sense. But I was finding ways to express myself and ultimately, that is what draws me to writing today. Not everyone will begin to seriously pursue writing just because of an experience on social media, but there is potential for people to discover their creativity and love for writing through different online platforms.
