I started this article saying “damn, I make people uncomfortable and I didn’t know it”. I’m from Kansas (a place where I have to imagine it is difficult to be open about one’s sexuality when it does not fit with society’s hetero-normative views) and have subsequently moved to Minnesota. I never saw LGBTQ couples growing up. When I moved, I could not help but smile and feel warmth when I encountered non-hetero couples. It was like seeing a giant panda and exclaiming “look how beautiful the world can be!”. I didn’t even think about how treating someone differently (even positively) promotes inequality of sorts.
