THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
O n Monday, the Senate voted 81–18 to end the government shutdown bringing an end to a 3-day showdown in the Senate. The Senate could not agree on a passing a clean Dream Act policy to protect Dreamers who parents brought them to the U.S. as kids for a better a life. Recap: In September, Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded the DACA program implemented by President Obama to help Dreamers to stay in the United States. Through this program, Dreamers applied for permits to work and attend school in the U.S. Rescinding DACA and the GOP refusing to pass a clean Dream Act are the reasons why our government shut down for 3 days. Here we are in January, not halfway through the first month and our government closed because of the GOP anti-immigration policies towards innocent people who make our nation great.

Sidebar: a group of people who left Britain, stole millions of people from Africa, have no right to decide who can stay in a country they stole from the Native Americans. The result of the government shutdown is not only based on bad policies and playing politics, it’s also based on racists ideologies. It’s baffling that innocent lives of people are in the hands of a party whose racists groupthink mindset will not only cost our nation economically but is hurting families. Not passing a clean Dream Act will cost our nation $430 billion dollars over the next decade and this includes the 2-year renewal of DACA applications for recipients. Innocent citizens who are part of our nation and contribute faithfully to actually making our nation great again should not have to worry about their lives. Our government is in a state of high dysfunction where we the people are fighting for our lives because the GOP refuses to make the right policies that are best for our nation.

Recap: in 2013 Senator Ted Cruz forced a government shutdown over the ACA which cost our nation $24 billion. The current 3-day shutdown is due to the GOP refusing to pass a clean Dream Act to help young adults brought here by their parents for a better life. It seems the trend of the GOP is to shut down the government over policies beneficial to the people. More importantly, the GOP is rescinding on policies costing our nation billions of dollars in the end. When it comes down to it, the government shutdown was due to the GOP illogical position on immigration that does nothing but damages our nation in the long run-sidebar: the GOP cannot decide who is allowed in a country they stole from the Native Americans.

Over the past 10 years, we have witnessed not only the obstructionist of the GOP, we have witnessed how they literally are refusing to carry out policies that are for the people. Recipients of DACA helped many families move into a better position in life. The government shutdown and the GOP refusal to pass a clean Dream Act will upend the lives of families who made it because of DACA.
