All the News That’s Fit to Print
For years, I’ve complained about not having a good way to consume news.
There are three buckets of stuff I care about:
Stuff happening around the world so I don’t sound stupid during dinner conversations e.g. Panama papers, the presidential election, Brexit
Stuff somewhat relevant to me that smart people have opinions about e.g. Microsoft buying Linkedin, the San Francisco rental market
Stuff I really care about e.g. Game of Thrones fan theories, Why the Warriors will sign Kevin Durant
I’ve tried following general news websites, RSS feeds, and Google alerts, but it always ends up being too much work to keep up. I want news pushed to me, but I need someone to take a pass at stripping out boring, unimportant stuff. And I don’t trust a machine learning algorithm to do that well enough just yet.
Lately, I’ve been following a few human-curated digests, and I’m starting to feel pretty good about knowing what’s going on in the world.
NYT Now: Daily digest of today’s world news — heavily politically-oriented. Pulls interesting articles from around the web.
The Skimm newsletter: Daily email newsletter with bullet points on today’s general news. Way more fun to read than above.
Launch ticker: Twice-a-day email newsletter on latest tech news and funding announcements. Thought pieces and interviews from VCs, founders, experts.
Nuzzel: News app that pulls out articles shared by your FB and Twitter friends. Results may vary based on how interesting your friends are.
Various sub-reddits: Community forum about every topic you can think of.
If you can think of any more sources that are complementary to or even better than what I’m already using, let me know!
