The Banality of Black Death

I’m white and had to have “The Talk” with my children several times.

After Treyvon Martin… if you are being bounced from home to home, spend your time smoking pot, have a violence record a mile long in high school, and on the way back from buying Purple Drank Skittles and Watermelon Juice you see a “White Hispanic” follow you to see why you were lurking in his neighborhood when you don’t live there, remember… when you play the “Knockout Game” with someone armed it may not end well for you.

After Michael Brown… if you are being bounced from home to home, spend your time smoking pot, steal from a store and throw the owner to the ground on video, then illegally walk down the middle of the street, ignore the lawful orders of a police officer, charge him, beat on his face, and go for his gun… it may not end well for you.

After Freddie Grey… if you have a habit of inflicting wounds on yourself during your many times in police custody hoping for a settlement, and you misestimate one time when launching yourself headfirst against the inside of the van according the black witness prisoner on the other side of the van… it may not end well for you.

After Tamir Rice… if you are being bounced from home to home and if you are the height of a man 5'8" and the weight of a man 175 and you hold something that cannot visibly be distinguished from a real gun, and you wave it around until a black person calls 911, if you point that perfectly gun shaped object at a cop when the cop shows up, and you know he has a real gun and thinks you do too… it may not end well for you.

Everyone should have “The Talk”.
