It’s feminization of man, really.
I’m like Rachel, I wanted experienced women around (and medical professionals of either sex). And my husband? I did the Russian thing and banned him. He set behind the curtain and read a book the first time. He originally wanted to do something along the lines of Excel spreadsheets, but my water broke in the middle of the night, so we went to the hospital right away, and in a few hours we had a baby.
He ended up in the room the second time and even cut the cord when was offered. On the grand scheme of all things parenting it was not a terribly important ritual. The way he interacts with kids on daily basis and coaches them through tough times is much more significant.
