Lordy, you must run hot all day. You see a lot of intimate things that go straight over my head, that’s for sure. In the book, Hooper not only has an affair with Mrs Brody, but dies as a sort of moral punishment. So guess he’s not that queer. Most people love that scar scene — all the moreso because of the well-known story behind it. Robert Shaw was very drunk and unable to get his lines when they tried to film it. As a professional, he was ashamed. The next day, he came in and did the take in one — creating that marvellous imagery of the Indiannapolis as he spoke.
I think it’s important to allow straight men the intimacy of touch, without prescribing queer overtones to it. Love comes in many forms. Not all of it involves sex.
