Our Second Anniversary: Some Small Business Tips

It’s our second anniversary.
To celebrate, we’d like to share some pieces of small business tips you might not find anywhere else.
Small business tips — they’re all over the Internet, aren’t they? So why are we marking our second anniversary offering bits of wisdom instead of serving up cake and ice cream?
I’ll tell you. During the course of any given week, I speak to lots of entrepreneurs and small business owners. Many of them ask me questions about how to grow their business. Now, I’ve never claimed to be a business coach, but I do love mentoring people. Few things are as satisfying as helping others reach their full potential.
So, I’m using this occasion to help business folks who are just starting out reach their milestones too.
Yes, you can find small business tips anywhere. But here are some unique ones that I’ve learned from experience, and that have helped The Editor’s Desk reach its second anniversary.
- Don’t Fear Networking: Networking is difficult for most people. But many, many businesses wouldn’t survive without it. That goes for The Editor’s Desk too. If you’re the shy type, try starting out with an event that’s completely geared towards networking. Someone will approach you, you’ll chat, exchange ideas, and trade business cards. Soon you’ll be over those fears and become a networking machine.
- Give Back: Know someone who can help someone else? Make the referral. As a connector, you’ll be strengthening your entrepreneurial community and become a valuable resource to your colleagues. They’ll remember you too, when they know someone you can help.
- Make Time for You: As demanding as being self-employed is, it’s unwise to devote all of your time to building your business. Your health might slip, personal relationships might suffer, and you’ll get so worn down that the quality of your work could fall below standard. Get rest, eat something, and call your mom.
Last year, on our first anniversary, I wrote a piece thanking our many clients, partners, friends, and supporters. My gratitude still rings true, even more so because we’ve strengthened our bonds and make our entrepreneurial community stronger overall.
It’s all about sticking together. Because when we work together, we all succeed.
