Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has been a buzzword in the tech realm, promising to revolutionize the landscape of artificial intelligence. However, the lack of a unified definition has led to a myriad of interpretations, adding to the confusion surrounding this elusive concept. In a recent paper published by a team of Google DeepMind researchers, a groundbreaking attempt has been made to establish not just one, but a taxonomy of definitions for AGI, shedding light on the intricacies of this controversial domain.

The term AGI, in essence, refers to artificial intelligence systems capable of matching or surpassing human capabilities across a wide spectrum of tasks. Yet, the specifics of what constitutes ‘human-like’ abilities and the extent of these tasks have historically remained ambiguous, with AGI often being portrayed as merely a superior version of AI.

The research team at Google DeepMind embarked on this endeavor by dissecting prominent existing definitions of AGI, aiming to identify the fundamental commonalities among them. This rigorous analysis led to the formulation of a comprehensive taxonomy comprising five ascending levels of AGI: emerging, competent, expert, virtuoso, and superhuman.
