I think one of the problems I have with the idea that anyone should be a “more responsible” consumer of healthcare is the idea that it is actually possible to shop for healthcare. My doctor (or really, their billing manager) cannot tell me how much any given procedure will cost or how much the drug I am being prescribed will cost because the costs vary depending on your insurance company and what pharmacy you use. If you can’t access that information, then there’s no way to manage your costs even if you are committed to doing so. (Not to mention the circumstances listed above — if I’m unconscious, I certainly can’t call to find out which hospital I should direct the ambulance to to make sure I’m in network.)
