20. Oblivion — Knowing her is both Exhilarating and Deadly
Dr Topaz waited patiently in the morning shadows, she knew that this was the time when Professor Eggies often left with SleepShamen to search for new elements to add to his EGG formulas. She longed for the early days back on Earth where their shared ideals and love created a way to finally free the Monsters from The Corporation’s control. But she knew that the man she had loved, Dr Hayden Ash, no longer existed.
All that was left was Professor Eggies, hellbent on creating The Army of 21 and burning the world to the ground. And that man must be stopped at all costs.
She could not watch the Lab 24/7, so she planned to insert a spy who could help her in her cause. Tiptoeing past the cages of dozing monsters she saw The Professor’s latest formula on the Lab bench; it was to be another MetalSkin with a spinning saw-like weapon.
Discarding The Professor’s test tube completely, and replacing it with her own, she adjusted her formula to mimic the look of The Professor’s latest creation. Except this Lab EGG would be designed by her. The real Softskin Monster would be dwelling within the metal exterior.
Oblivion hatched knowing immediately she owed her existence, and loyalty, to Dr Topaz. She also knew that if any of the other Monsters were to find out she was female they would know instantly that she had not been created by Professor Eggies, as only a female Human can create a female Monster. Despite living with the burden of so many secrets she is able to use her charm to easily gets the other Monsters to divulge their plans, which she then passes on to Dr Topaz.
At all costs she knows she must hide her true identity. At all costs she must hide her true purpose. At all costs she must hide her true feelings. And the cost is great indeed, never daring to let the other Monsters get close to her, she conceals her despair with charm and buries her torment with lava juice.
Forming a barrier to those who would truly wish to know her.
An emotional wall that is as impenetrable as her fake MetalSkin.
