It has taken you many hours of trekking through the jungle to seek out this exact spot. You are not the first and you will not be the last but you still cannot help but wonder if the tales of strange monsters, waiting to be hatched, are real or just fairy tales told to gullible tourists.
As the last hours of daylight fade, leaves rustle in the bush ahead. A figure steps out, a mere silhouette outlined by the final rays of the setting sun on this strange, distant planet. He appears agitated, but you stand firm.
“It didn’t go quite to plan, the hatchings, they were, they were more than just weapons” He appears to be talking to himself unaware of your presence.
“The SoftSkins came first, sure some were missing eyes but they seemed to make up for it with other senses, powers even. Then I had a breakthrough with the fusing technique and the MetalSkins were born; strength, weapons, my own personal army. Some so loyal!”
As if hearing his master’s call, a small creature comes bounding from the undergrowth, tongue almost as large as its rounded body, it is surrounded by a feint mist. A strong smell of almonds reaches your nose as your vision starts to go hazy.
The figure steps closer now and you can see he is wearing a lab coat. His skin is rugged, sunburnt, like that of an elderly man yet you see his eyes blaze with a younger passion. An implant connects tightly to his forehead and he wears his beard like a cloak in order to hide his misdeeds from showing on his face.
“I wanted to burn it all down you see?! An army so great I could seek revenge on all who had wronged me. An endless hatching of slaves to do my bidding, built so tough that no military could stop them.” His voice is raised but in your dizzy state it somehow seems far away.
“But I was wrong, so wrong. They were not slave monsters or robots. I had created life and it was amazing; kind and crazy and oh so ANGRY! By the planets Zooka, why could I not see the care you needed?! Maybe then so many would not have been injured, forced to flee the safety of the Lab”
He pats a canvas bag that is slung over his shoulder, it is bulging with what appears to be EGGs, trembling, almost fearfully. Then, as if a spell is broken, he looks directly at you, and in his hands is one of the EGGs.
“Take it, they need someone better than me, someone who can truly care for them. I have a few here and the LAB still runs I think, making more, day in, day out. Although stay clear of the Vassal Corporation, they are run by the evil and the greedy. This EGG has found you”
He places the EGG in your hands and you feel warmth coming from the growing Monster inside. Before you have a chance to say anything, he, and his faithful companion, are gone. The mist clears from your head, leaving you with a slight headache and the realisation you must now raise a Monster.
