Leg 1

Houston Texans @ New England Patriots

In any other season, this wouldn’t be anything other than a patriot blowout.

But this isn’t any other season in New England. Rumours of rifts between Brady and Belichick have continued throughout the offseason……………Brady continues to defy father time, but as many QBs before him have found out, when time does catch up with you the drop off can be severe. Plus, even if Brady is at his dominant best, the Pats have perhaps the worst Wide Receiver Corps in the entire league. History says the patriots are still going to be the patriots, but there is a nagging feeling that this season could be the beginning of the end.

On paper the Texans have one of the most exciting rosters in the league. Young QB Deshaun Watson flashed rare superstar qualities last year before his season was ended early by injury. It Watson can rediscover that form and understanding with star WR DeAndre Hopkins from a year ago then the Texans have an offense that will be hard to stop. Throw in a defence that includes former no1 pick Jadeveon Clowney, newly signed ball hawk Tyrann Mathieu and the returning ‘prince of Houston’ JJ Watt; and a victory over the Patriots in Foxboro doesn’t seem out of their reach. Tough game to call early in the season, the Captain covers wins for both teams.

Leg 2

Tennessee Titans @ Miami Dolphins

This one is about as uninspiring a match-up as you can get. The Titans struggled to find an identity on both sides of the ball during the Mike Mularkey era. Mularkey was jettisoned in part because he failed to get the best out of your signal caller Marcus Mariota. In fact Mariota’s play regressed over the course of Mularkey’s two seasons. Despite their mediocrity, the Titans managed to win a playoff game last year and should be better than a Dolphins side those season has all the ingredients to be a car crash. Both the GM and Head Coach need a winning season to save their jobs this year, but will have to do so with a squad that is below average in terms of talent. Enigmatic QB Ryan Tannehill’s preseason performances have just been good enough to give the Dolphins hope that he can develop into the player they hoped he would when drafted in the first round in 2012. The Captain slightly favours the Titans in another tight one.

Leg 3

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ New Orleans Saints

The Bucs were one of the worst teams in the league last season and they start this season without their Franchise QB. Jameis Winston’s off the field actions have landed him a three game suspension to start the season leaving Ryan Fitzpatrick to start this Sunday against the saints. Until Winston’s return, this Bucs side looks worse than it was last season.

The Saints on the other hand are in win now mode. Trading for Teddy Bridgewater was more about insurance for Drew Brees this season than any long term succession plan and why not!? The saints offense was breath-taking at times last year, spear headed not by Drew Brees but by the one-two punch of RBS Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. Brees was still mustard when called upon, the effect being the most balanced Saints offense in years. Ingram is suspended for the opener, but this saint side are rarely beaten at home and will want to send a message in week 1. The Captain can’t see past a comfortable Saints win.

Leg 4

Dallas Cowboys @ Carolina Panthers

This is a matchup of two playoff side from a year ago, but whereas the Panthers are widely thought to have strengthened this offseason Dallas may have regressed. A healthy Greg Olsen and the pre-season form of rookie D.J Moore are a timely boost to a WR group that was largely ineffective last year. Carolina depends on the ground game and the signing of C.J Anderson looks like good business with the ex-Broncos RB pencilled in to do most of the running between the tackles. Throw in Cam’s generational abilities and an offense more prepared to take advantage of 2nd year scatter-back Cristian McCaffrey and the Panthers running game will be tough to stop.

Dallas’ own ground game may prove tough to stop with Ezekiel Elliot spearheading the run game. Elliot and the run game are not the problem in Dallas, instead its young QB Dak Prescott’s ability to show he is more than just a game manager if these cowboys are going to go back to the playoffs in an improving NFC East. Losing and not replacing Dez Bryant means Dak has to do it with a less talent cast than last year. The Captain thinks the Panthers will ease past the Cowboys on their way to the NFC South.
