From augmented sneakers to fictional flexers; Elastique according to the interns
Doing an internship at Elastique means working as a professional and passionate team member. Apologies such as “My dog ate my code” are replaced by passion and enthusiasm for the work. Today we’ll put two of our former interns, Daniël Ajubi Awa and Ruben Fransz, in the spotlight.
Both Ruben and Daniël studied Communication and Multimedia Design (CMD) at the Hogeschool van Arnhem and Nijmegen, where they focussed on concept, storytelling and prototyping. They developed this skillset even further at our concept and design department.
Besides working the run-of-the-mill intern duties like, getting coffee, running errands, playing video games with their supervisors and recording the weekly podcast, they got to work on their own research projects. First, we’ll paint a picture of these projects. Don’t worry, we will keep it short. After this, we will move on to what makes an internship at Elastique amazing (according to them!).
Daniël’s research focused on blurring the lines between reality and fiction by using various storytelling techniques. Combined with our expertise in interactive storytelling through various types of on- and offline media, he was able to establish an engaging interactive experience on Instagram. Daniel created and acted as a fictional character Eliza.exe on the platform, starting conversations with real people, carrying out the story with the sole purpose to completely submerge real people into the fictional story world of Eliza.exe.
Ruben combined his research project with his one true love, collecting sneakers, a passion which he shares with a lot of colleagues here at Elastique (Anyone who’s ever visited our headquarters can acknowledge this!). Exclusive sneakers often end up in the hands of resellers, instead of the passionate sneaker heads. These resellers obtain sneakers by using bots and other techniques to bluff their way through the online queues. Ruben wanted to do something about this, by shifting the need of buyers towards a virtual space. He created an Augmented Reality (AR) prototype where users can virtually obtain and collect sneakers. Proving the relevance of the project, Nike themselves released their own AR application, but — in our opinion — Ruben’s prototype beats the hell out of Nikes app in terms of both performance and stability (by far! 🔥).
Even though the projects of Daniël and Ruben might seem very different, they have a lot of overlap in their essence. Both projects fit well within our own DNA as interactive storytellers, something of which we are very proud!
Both Ruben and Daniël were very enthusiastic about their time at Elastique. Ruben had the expectation that doing an internship would be something like:
“I thought it would be like working in a broom closet where once a while somebody checks why the light is on”.
But this was (gladly) not the case. They felt like they were part of the team in no-time and got involved in a multitude of projects that needed a helping hand. The team was very involved in their internships, helping them take their projects to the next level.
