Thought Dump #2: Doomfist

Thought dump will be a regular series where I will post my unedited thoughts and musings about Overwatch that don’t merit a full length article.

The thought has been consistently floating around in my head ever since his announcement and this weekend I’ve come to a conclusion.

“Will Doomfist become a necessity, much like Ana?”

The question of will Doomfist be good never crossed my mind. It was obvious that he would be good, his mobility and CC alone ensure that. His high damage is almost just a bonus.

But watching APEX and seeing Arhan and Wekeed of AF Blue and LW Red destroy the opposing Winston players began to tip me off the fence, where the answer is yes.

Winston’s leaps are relatively telegraphed. Especially when engaging from distance or stalling the Winston player will jump very high in the air meaning they are easy to see, and predict where they land.

All the Doomfist has to do is charge his RMB, Rocket Punch, that has just a four second cooldown, and slam the Winston upon landing. If lined up properly it is an instant 400 damage, which the Doomfist can quickly follow with other abilities or his LMB to execute the enemy Winston.

Doomfist can do something similar to enemy D.Vas, Tracers, or anyone who dives really. We’ve even seen Doomfists using their Rocket Punch in a similar way to Lucio’s boop, to knock enemy divers back.

Doomfist alone possess the tools to counter the core aspects of the current meta; Winston as main tank, flanking Tracers, D.Va and her Defense Matrix, and he can even punish Zenyatta’s lack of mobility by killing him or forcing Transcendence out.

And once put into the emerging meta comp of Reinhardt, Zarya, Doomfist, McCree, Lucio, and your choice of Ana/Zenyatta, it completly demolishes the old standard dive. [I will be writing about this composition in detail later, likely in a full-length feature article.]

Watching today’s Contenders match between GamersOrigin and Team Singularity made that clearer than ever. Leafy was, unsurprisingly, a monster on Doomfist and this match answered the question that Doomfist will be a necessity.

Sombra was released, and was/is good. But at no point did she ever feel like a must have pick across a wide array of maps. On 2CP she was, but she was dependent on specific maps and health pack placements.

Orisa is bad, enough said.

But Ana on the other hand was at a time a must pick. She was single-handedly responsible for driving entire metas through a combination of her raw power and versatility.

That’s where Doomfist is now. Many professional teams have begun to play him regularly, often to fantastic results. And in clashes between teams who have embraced him and the new style surrounding him, against those who have not, it is massively in favor of Doomfist.

Moving forward Doomfist will be a required pick by any professional team who wants to remain competitive at the highest level because his addition to the game is breaking the old meta.

The length of his stay at the forefront of the meta will of course be patch dependent. But on the current live patch, and the next one with D.Va and Mercy changes, I guarantee Doomfist will be required.
