I spoke at a single conference in 2016, and another in 2017. I had an amazing time at both! My biggest goal for 2018 was to give more conference talks and maybe-kinda-hopefully take a step towards becoming one of those cool, famous, Conference Speaking People.

I spoke at seven conferences this past year. While this hardly approaches Rachel Andrew or Sarah Drasner levels, seven is a big step up from one for me. I got to travel to Europe twice, San Francisco, and Toronto. I met some wonderful people. I felt more inspired and excited to be a web developer.

Mapbox Studio empowers designers and developers to create beautiful map designs, kind of like photoshop for maps. And just like photoshop — okay, probably a little less than photoshop — it’s complex. Very, very complex.

Studio is a large React — Redux app that renders data to a WebGL canvas with the help of Mapbox GL. Studio provides a suite of tools for managing ones map styles, datasets, and tilesets (composable map chunks), allows users to draw shapes on a map and add data to those shapes to create data to visualize, and of course it has a robust style editor with a suite of tools to make a gorgeous, expressive map of their very own.

A few years ago, I was working the best job I’ve ever had, as a front end dev at an amazing agency in DC. I loved that job so much that sometimes I still come home thinking that it might be the best job I’ll ever have. I got to work with wonderful, incredibly smart, driven people, and we produced impressive work that made people smile.

It was also an agency — I can sense a few knowing nods in the audience. Business was naturally cyclical, which made for a few periods of intense, 18 hours-a-day, 6 days a week…

When I submitted a (pretty dope, and also buyable, just saying) tee to Cotton Bureau, I was met with a terrible response: “this design has too many colors”. While I firmly believe that there is ✨ NO SUCH THING AS TOO MANY COLORS ✨, their print shop could only do a maximum of 6. I turned to halftones, little dots of one color on top of another color, to provide more flexibility. Let me show you how that worked.

Step 0: What are halftones and why are they cool?

Halftones are dots of varying sizes & densities placed on top of a solid color so to a viewer standing further…
