Today provides us with the epic return of the fan favorite Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi, in his own self-titled series streaming on Disney+! At last, we get to see the events unfold after the titular hero failed to sway his best friend and apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, from the sinister clutches of Emperor Palpatine.

Obi-Wan Kenobi’s tone is set with a bone-chilling recap of past events from the prequel trilogy, conveying the dark descent of the “chosen one,” Anakin Skywalker. Rife with thought-provoking themes and grand-scale settings, Kenobi plays as the epic space drama the property is known for and contains far more than just lightsaber duels and fan service. For those looking to get into the nearly 50-year-old property, this isn’t a bad place to start.

Ewan McGregor leads a cast of new and OG characters, all delivering stellar performances. With the many callbacks and Easter eggs sprinkled throughout this tale of legacy and destiny, any Star Wars fan is right to be giddy with excitement. The damage that was done throughout the galaxy since the tragic events of Revenge of the Sith can truly be felt within the dialogue and story beats. With a cast and script this good, it’s no question that Kathleen Kennedy and company have another hit on their hands.

Once the episode reached its end, I instantly became enamored of the fact that there are still five episodes to go in this highly anticipated addition to the Star Wars saga. Disney has finally given us what we have all waited to see since Episode III. I remember going to see that movie with my mom and my brother when I was just a kid. Now, I realized my inner child never went away. He was simply waiting for the resurgence of Ben Kenobi.

Rating: 5/5
