Netflix didn’t ask me to do the things that I did — I pushed and made a bet about the value of these data visualization approaches and techniques. That’s how data-driven approaches started, too. Companies made a bet that ML and A/B testing and ETLs were worth investing in, and they out-competed the companies that didn’t. That’s how you make change, whether leading from the top or from the bottom: you make a bet that one approach is better than another rather than picking the approach least likely to get you fired. That’s a cultural shift and one that I’m sure a lot of companies aren’t ready to make but not because they lack the resources, they just lack the vision.
