People have always been obsessed with the idea of finding true love and living happily ever after. They assume that there is someone out there for them that will complete them and accept them for who they truly are. They are so blinded by the possibility of true love and soulmates that they do not recognize the warning signs in their relationship. Thus they unknowingly enter into an abusive relationship and find themselves trapped with no way out.

We as college students need to be able to identify the signs of an abusive relationship not only in our lives but in the lives of our friends and families as well. I feel that it is crucial to be aware of these signs regardless of a ones relationship status. The key is to be able to identify the signs early in order to help the person get to a safe place. Therefore I decided that I wanted to raise awarness on this topic by sharing it with all of you.

We have all heard the stereotypes pertaining to abusive relationships and I believe that they exist partially because no one understands what it is like to be in one. It is very easy to judge someone especially when we have never walked in their shoes. People say things like “ why would he/she stay in that relationship if they knew it was bad for them” or “ they could have easily walked away and got help.’’ The thing is we as people really have no right to judge them for staying and not getting help. There are a million reasons why they might not have been able to leave and our opinions often times do not need to be voiced. We have another job and that is to be able to recognize the signs and get them help. If we can do this then we can help them in the best way possible.
