By definition, balance is your ability to position your center of mass over your base of support. Additionally, it is the ability to limit too much motion within a joint or series of joints. In order to sprint, the idea is to eliminate unnecessary movements so that the athlete can be more efficient. By putting our athletes through balance developing drills, it teaches them to remain balanced when they perform athletic movements, such as a sprint, and therefore waste less energy. On Wednesday during our speed training, we had our athletes perform the Warrior 3 yoga pose. In this movement, the athletes put the weight of their bodies on one foot and lower their torso while simultaneously raising their back leg, remaining balanced on their single foot. With our more advanced athletes, we had them perform the same movement on a foam pad to increase the instability, therefore forcing them to be more balanced.
