Most things in life are a gray area — but that doesn’t mean we sit paralyzed, particularly when abuse and injustice are in play. None of the people who were disciplined or let go at my husband’s company had that occur after one incident. There was always a huge history of offensive behavior that was detrimental to others which was thoroughly investigated.
Edit: And I thought your position was not that it’s impossible to know if actual unacceptable behavior took place, but that bullying is inevitable. So which is it?
The woman who wrote this piece described years of well documented and complained about abuse. There was no uncertainty about whether or not the man in question was being unfairly accused. Her company acknowledged “speaking to him about it.” This whole concept of poor little ole men’s lives potentially being unfairly derailed is just a red-herring in the face of women’s lives and career’s routinely being derailed by this type of abusive behavior. Do false accusations ever get made? I’m sure they do, but at a tiny rate compared to all the actual substantive ones which get ignored, as this author’s were.
And if you are someone who condones keeping an “important player” around in spite of their overwhelmingly bad behavior, that says a lot about your integrity.
