I’m a little weird

During my lunch-break today I was talking to one of my classmates about some random topics. I don’t remember how we got there, but at some point I ended up telling her about a weird thing of me. How I sneeze when I eat gum, or breath mints. Every single time. Whenever I chew on it, I sneeze a few times and it’s over. I thought it was just me, but it seems like I’m not the only one doing this (thank God).

I decided to Google it, and it turns out that many people have this. There is even a name for when people sneeze extremely often!

Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst Syndrome.

A crazy set of words that honestly do not make a lot of sense to me. But apparently I have it.

The main reason people sneeze is to get stuff out of your nose that doesn’t belong there. Like bacteria. But when I eat gum, something else happens. The taste of menthol tickles a nerve in the palate. When that tickling gets to my brain, it mistakes it for me having something up my nose. (I didn’t come up with that explanation, these are wise words from Dutch doctor Rico Rinkel)

Silly brain of mine. Luckily it isn’t harmful in any way. And I’m cool with my ‘brain error’. :)
