The necessary steps

Sweat raced down my cold back

the band of my sweatpants swallowing the sweat that left me

my muscles cramped

the feeling of disappointment set in

it was not supposed to be this hard

the return was not the road I thought it would be

the gravel had cracked underneath me

hitting the ground at a rapid rate

the joints inside of my knee clenched together

I hadn’t done this in so long

I had always pushed this thought aside

“I’ll run next week”

I always said

finally, next week was today

my fear overpowered me

Without thinking

One foot moved

Then the other

The ache in my knee was there

But my focus was on putting one foot in front of the other

Without knowing,

I was running faster than I had before
