Coal-Hearted

Buried it deep, packed the earth tightly around it.
I thought it would be safe that way.
I must have buried it too deep or too tight.

I met someone.
I tried to dig it up.

But it had turned to coal.
I turned it over and over in my hands
As it blackened them.
