CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT THEORIES

B.sc Project

While reading literatures for my project i came across certain child development theories which i would love to share. ( Well just one actually)

This one i call AFRICAN PARENT STYLE

Parenting styles: This is my favorite actually. Refers to methods parents use to discipline their children and they are;

Authoritarian style or “too hard” this method is highly demanding but not a responsive parenting. The children follow strict rules, have no say, have no right to make decisions till a very much older age or voice out their opinions. When one breaks the rule, it usually results in punishment. In extreme cases, abusive parents fall into the group and the children end up lacking self esteem, the children are expected to obey without questioning.

(hmmm, this one i call overseas style)

Permissive or “too soft” place few demands on child, allow child to regulate his or her behaviour. Parents take on the role more of a friend than a parent.

Authoritative , or “just right,” parenting style is portrayed as moderately demanding and responsive. Authoritative parents set and reinforce limits, but are much more responsive and willing to listen to questions. When children fail to meet expectations, they are more likely to be forgiving instead of punishing, and see discipline as teaching. Children of authoritative parents are thought to be the most happy, capable, and successful.

Uninvolved parenting style is characterized by few demands, low responsiveness, and little communication. These parents seem to be detached from their child’s life and, in extreme cases, may neglect or reject their child. Their children may lack self-control, have lower self-esteem, and are less competent than peers.

SO THERE ARE MANY MORE ACTUALLY LIKE ATTACHMENT THEORY, COGNITIVE THEORY, ECOLOGICAL SYSTEM THEORY …BUT RIGHT NOW IF YOU WANT TO READ MORE CLICK THIS https://www.google.com.ng/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=22&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwixva_q4aHSAhWmCMAKHTwcDwoQFgiNATAV&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.springer.com%2Fcda%2Fcontent%2Fdocument%2Fcda_downloaddocument%2F9781461478065-c1.pdf%3FSGWID%3D0-0-45-1414115-p175161245&usg=AFQjCNF2m729yBsOgQly23BsB_otD4ZpJQ&sig2=yL0Bcyoym8kkSMW-_rp4sA&bvm=bv.147448319,d.ZGg
