Remember the beautiful words ‘raindrops on roses’ in the popular children’s classic The Sound of Music? Your children could miss out on similar childhood pleasures of the rainy season, if you insist that they stay indoors and prevent them from going out in the rain. Instead, as a good responsible parent, take the
precautions needed to protect your children, educate them about the dangers, and then, without holding yourself back, join them in their rain games!

Here’s what you can do, after you dry yourself with a good towel rub!

Get the right rain gear

Get good quality rain gear for your children. Include a water-proof school bag, an umbrella, rain boots, rain pants, and a hooded rain jacket as a hood offers better head protection compared to hats or caps. Pack an extra pair of dry socks in the school bag. Insist on your child getting these items, but leave the final selection of style, color and brand to them as children can be very brand conscious!

The threat from lightning and thunderstorms

Educate your children about the danger from lightning during thunderstorms. If outdoors in school, they should move away from trees, electrical poles or light masts and crouch low on the ground avoiding any outdoor game or movement. They should stay out of water and avoid touching anything metallic. Indoors, children must avoid using computers, corded phones and other electrical appliances. Teach them to stay away from doors, windows, the terrace and open balconies during thunder storms.
