Joanna’s childhood memory
EXT. BEACH BOARDWALK — EVENING — FLASHBACK
Stunning esplanade by the Majorca’s Cathedral. A blend of tourist licking melting ice-cream cones and locals walking their dogs in the shade.
A cheery young Joanna (6) on her knees looking under a wooden bench as if playing a game of hide and seek. Her mother, Carlotta (30s) kneels down next to her.
(out of it)
Can you find it? It’s driving me mad!
No, mummy. Maybe it’s hiding on the other one.
CRICK. CRICK. Joanna stands up and runs to a bench a couple of feet away. She kneels down again popping her head under it.
We are cold Joanna. Come here!
Joanna runs back to her mother. Carlotta stays on her knees, at the same eye level as Joanna’s.
Do you know when we will know we are hot?
Little Joanna shakes her head as she listens really closely.
They will go quiet. And we won’t hear them sing that CRICK, CRICK, CRICK.
Joanna’s eyes light up with excitement. Joanna runs off and checks bench after bench mirroring Carlotta. They look like lunatics.
People around them look at them confused.
Carlotta brushes aside the skirt of a FEMALE TOURIST (50s) sitting on a bench.
CRICK, CRICK. A brief silent.
Mummy, I found one!
Carlotta holds the CRICKET up and STARES at it in awe.
You know what they sing Joanna?
Little Joanna shakes her head again.
Because they are trying to catch the attention of the females.
Joanna smiles. Off screen we hear a MALE VOICE.
POLICE MAN (O.S.)
Excuse me, Miss. Everything OK?
Little Joanna and Carlotta turn around to face them. A POLICE MAN (40s) and a POLICE WOMAN (30s) look at them with a serious expression.
We caught the cricket!
The police woman smiles at her.
Why don’t you show me the cricket while mummy talks to my friend?
Joanna obeys like a good catholic school girl. The police man gets closer to Carlotta. Carlotta’s eye blink fast, as if trying to focus.
(in a lower voice)
There’s been a complaint about public intoxication. You need to come with us to the station.
Carlotta takes a step back. The police man tries to grab her arm but she resists.
POLICE MAN (CONT’D)
Please Miss, don’t make a scene. Your daughter…
No! Let me.. Go!
A tense moment. Little Joanna drops the cricket and runs to her mother. The female police woman stops her.
Carlotta FIGHTS and KICKS. She is handcuffed and put inside a police car. Little Joanna looks scared. She cries.
Mummy! Mummy! Where are you going?! Mummy! I want to go with you!
INT. QUIET POLICE STATION — LATER
A simple white room with a couple of desks and chairs. Looks like a waiting room in a doctor’s office rather than a police station.
Joanna is playing with a RUBIKS CUBE next to the police woman.
We hear fast foot STEPS.
KELLY and GABRIEL, in their mid-thirties, their faces soften when they see little Joanna.
Get them away from my child! Joanna, come here sweetie!
Kelly is holding Joanna’s hand. Joanna looks at her mother afraid. Gabriel and Kelly’s faces are filled with disappointment.
Don’t take her away from me. Gabriel, please! I beg of you…
I’m doing this for you, Carlotta. You need to get better.
Carlotta’s faces turns red with rage.
I hate you! You never had my back! Ever! I will never forget you! Joanna!
END OF FLASHBACK.
