Chasing cash means your vision is lost

This is a tough topic to discuss. Cash. Every entrepreneur needs it and at some point will not exist without it. For almost two decades I have cycled through cash problems more times than I care to remember. Each time I find myself chasing cash it seems to box me in and cloud not only my judgement but my purpose. Many entrepreneurs have been there or are there now. You started your business to build something based on an opportunity you saw in the market. You figured you could make some money doing it but money was probably not the key motivator – until you really need it.

Where there is no vision, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18 KJV)

Because I have personally experienced the “cash crunch” so many times I can say with authority that every single time I had lost my vision or had failed to keep it in focus I ended up chasing cash. Out of desperation I formed partnerships with people I should not have formed partnerships with. I adjusted my activities to capitalize on short term opportunities at the expense of long term value and ultimately wasted time that did nothing for me other than produce a marginal result.

Compare this to the investor psychology associated with buying stocks. Everyone knows that you should buy low and sell high however many investors are simply unable to actually do it. The result is missed opportunity to capitalize on events that could really change your portfolio. Fear gets a hold of our emotions and our emotions end up driving our decisions. Emotional decisions are the worst to make because emotions are unreliable and unpredictable. The same thing happens with me when I am chasing cash. I know better than to make emotional decisions but have a hard time being disciplined to make decisions based on my vision.

Making decisions based on your vision is hard to do but when I have been able to it I’ve been amazed at the results. Because I believe God knows where I am and wants me to discover who He is, it’s almost as if pursuing my vision is how God shows me who He is. Folks that don’t believe in God do the same thing (walking by faith) but they may not call it faith.

I believe God has created me to fulfil a unique vision and as an entrepreneur if I am pursuing it everyday He opens and closes doors that help me to 100X the results. To the extent that I lose sight of that vision it’s usually because I think I have everything under control to which God says “Ok go ahead but I will still be here when it doesn’t work out”. That’s pretty reassuring and gives me hope. If I pursue my vision, God shows me who He is and the world is better because of this interaction.

If you find yourself in a cash crunch I would encourage you to revisit what you are spending your time doing. Chances are you are reacting each day to your circumstances instead of being pro-active in trying to change them. Remembering your vision can be the key to changing your circumstances which is the key to changing your cash position.
