Evenings are the perfect time to relax and just unwind a few hours before you start work again the next day. As a person who works in the office (and does freelance and hobby work after that), I’ve been valuing my leisure time more and more during the evenings. As my days get busier, the more I value my evenings to just write or just listen to music.

So I went through two of my Youtube accounts and I noticed that I had some Original Filipino Music (OPM) songs saved on my favorites list and a sudden nostalgia just hit me as I went through. Aside from my Broadway, Jazz, and Instrumental soundtracks that I have saved in my laptop and PC, OPM has is own uniqueness too.

So without further ado, here are my top 5 OPM songs that are worth listening to during the evenings. I know 5 song titles are not enough, but I do what I can to make more posts like this in the future.

5- Color My World (Regine Velasquez)

My first impression with the movie Wanted: Perfect Mother is like a Filipino South of Music. Regardless of the slight similarities of the plot, I really enjoyed the soundtrack of this movie. This song is one of my favorites. Good and happy vibes yay!

4- Not Your Ordinary Girl (Kyla Feat. Jimmy Muna)

I started to love the R&B genre after abusing Kyla’s ‘Not Your Ordinary Girl’ album on the Walkman. No regrets really. It’s a good album for one awesome Pinoy artist.

Dear Lord, I miss Kyla! My favorite songs are her rendition of Michael Jackson’s Human Nature and Not Your Ordinary Girl. I remember abusing my Walkman playing this song on repeat. This is one of my very first R&B songs I’ve liked — and it’s from Filipino artist no less.

3- Waitin’ (Lala)

Seriously, why isn’t this song not in Spotify?!

I completely understand that you haven’t heard of Lala — She’s a Half-Filipina, Half-Indonesian OPM artist. During the time when MYX was still in its greater glory and the blog and social networking site Multiply was still alive, her songs were like a breath of fresh air from the mainstream Pinoy and international songs that were in hype during the time. Waitin’ is one of my favorite songs from her. Heard it in MYX one time, and I was hooked. Apparently, this song is still part of my phone’s music playlist.

I had a hard time finding this song online. Luckily, somebody was able to share it on Multiply (years before they made a decision of changing it to an online marketplace and completely close the site for good). Aside from Waitin’, this is also a good song recommendation too.

2– Goodnyt (Barbie’s Cradle)

“So goodbye to the Sun, goodnight. All the pain will be gone for a while. Goodnight.”

I’m a huge Barbie’s Cradle fan back in high school! For someone who is so different from her peers back then, this song has been my comfort during those years. The most striking lyrics in this song for me is this : In my sanctuary, I become a child.

1- Dahilan (Barbie Almalbis)

No contest: My most favorite OPM song ever.

When Barbie Almalbis left Barbie’s Cradle to pursue a solo career, this song was part of her first solo album called Parade. I was so hooked into this song before that I remember only having this saved in my cellphone. The lyrics, the music, and the meaning of the song are completely timeless. There are still a lot of favorite OPM songs on my list. This one however, will always be on my number one spot.

So these are my Top 5 choices. What do you think? Do you have your own Top 5? Leave it in the comments!
