Punch Up, Not Down

News You Can Use for August 30, 2016
Punch Up, Not Down

by Pete Seat

In politics, the ‘ole saying goes: you punch up, not down. When you’re winning, the goal is to stay on the high road and run toward the electoral finish line. When you’re losing, on the other hand, you start taking wild swings at your opponent hoping something lands and knocks them down for the count.

John Gregg, in his past two ads, has been punching up at Eric Holcomb. What does that tell you about Gregg’s campaign?

He’s been running now for 276 weeks — or 5 years, 3 months and 14 days. And yet, based on his own campaign’s terms of engagement, it’s high time to get physical on the air.

Eric Holcomb, on the other hand, went on the air this past weekend with a statewide ad to describe his call to serve in the United States Navy — in his own words. No ominous Hollywood voice actor sitting in a studio speaking in a synchronized staccato to compliment grainy photo-shopped images. Nope, our ad was all Eric talking about his background and our future.

That Monmouth poll must have stung.

Tonight, We Forum!
The three candidates for governor will all gather, but appear separately, at a forum hosted by Indiana University’s Public Policy Institute tonight.

The event begins promptly at 7:00pm ET and is being moderated by former Chief Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court, Randall Shepard.

See (most of) you there.

Super Duper Saturday
On this campaign, every Saturday is a super Saturday, but last Saturday was really Super Saturday.

Hundreds of volunteers flocked to our twelve regional offices to make calls and knock on doors. You can read about some of the ones who stayed inside (and dry) making calls on behalf of the campaign. Their claim to fame? They are all students at the aforementioned Indiana University and know Eric Holcomb and Suzanne Crouch are the dynamic duo best suited to continue Indiana’s momentum.
